nankangs for 2014 rt
« on: 02 February, 2017, 08:39:42 PM »
i have been looking for replacement tyres for 15inch rims for a while now
2 false starts gets a bit expensive
i picked up these nankangs in melbourne from the WHEEL SHOP on ebay and this afternoon got them fitted
was only able to take short ride due to rego but will post more detail when i get a chance to really test
set all tyres pressures to 24psi......just guessing really
i came back with a huge grin so maybe the start of something good
front did feel a bit boney....will play with pressures

this is rear  225/50/15       fits all year models?   cost $130 ea   XR611  ...my oem rear close to wear bars at only 7000kms

the fronts are same size as oem but turned out 20mm less in circumference    165/55/15  cost $106 ea  AS1

i didnt mind smaller dia as even lower profile is what i was after.....but very similar to orig tyres and no clearance issues with guards

the tread pattern is asymmetrical and non directional....so far so good....3 tyres for $330

The difference in diameter for your fronts may have an effect on Nanny, so if you start to have issues with Nanny you may have to change them.
But hopefully all good

I've gone 175/60 fronts with no nanny problems, Kiwi, so small size changes don't seem to bother her.

Spyder John has been running Nankangs for years and reckons they are a good thing on his 10RT - yes I know they run the 14 on the front.

Took th bike out today
First impressions ( never tried car tyres before)
Was 2 up but bike was tempting me to go quicker
As per kiwi post nanny was much more prevalent.........but not sure if it was because I was going harder into corners
Felt much more confident into corners especially long right handers
Bottom line.....I think the car tyres are miles ahead....the next size I buy will be na kangas 165/60/15 albeit not AS1 hopefully to get closer to Oem circumference
Reduced pressure to 18 on front....felt about right
Will post after I try bike 1 up
But a big thumbs up so far

i really like these tyres :beer1:
the bike has a nervousness(hard to put into words)about it....it darts into corners now, more like riding an rs....a little oversteer but if you keep it smooth its great...the minute you correct(baulk or chicken out),nanny comes on due to gee's :teaser:
i suppose any car tyres would give the same result but these are the first ive been able to evaluate..no going back :ok:

next set i try will be the nankang 165/60/15  eco2  CX-668 (a bit dearer at $130)  ....i wont die wondering :clever:
hopefully some one else might get a set and feedback.......running mine at 18psi :yahoo:

Robby  :biker:

hi robby.....it was spyder johns feedback which got me to try nankangs...i couldnt find his old posts and wasnt sure if he had Nexens
so thanks for the heads up.........re sizes, nankang make 225/50/15 for the rear(same for all year models and its $130) and its the same physical size as oem....its a real meat eater...and if i get somewhere near spyder johns kilometers on it...well
just need to get some miles up now :biker:

the tyres now have 14,000k's up :scared:
the rear nankang is now close to the wearbars(i expect it to get me home 1000km's) :pulling-hair:
orig depth is 8mm
today depth is 3.5mm
the km's have included 4,000k's towing a camper trailer :ok:

i did expect more k's from the rear tyre, but given that it only cost $130 and has doubled the life of the oem tyre already, am relatively happy :jumping0047:
...also the wear has been even across the tyre, unlike the kenda which wore alarmingly in the middle :confused0068:

will check fronts tomorrow :clever:

russ :character0029: :character0029:

https://imgur.com/a/lok8S

I checked the fronts today and saw good results
orig depth is 8mm
right front is 6.5 even across tread
left front is 6mm also even across tread :clever:

not sure why the diff but they did 14,000k's so expect another 28,000 :coffee:
they cost $100 each so happy with that :jumping0047:

the fronts have been on 18psi almost all the time
started at 24 with them but soon dropped pressure progressively due to the harshness of the ride
I wanted to keep them as stiff as I could stand and 18 was about it
the only negative I have with the AS1 is the slight lowering of the front end which I can ill afford

the rear came down to 22 for the same reasons as above
the rear tyre is difficult to break out wet or dry even with the JASE mod
I am really happy with the rear XR611 but still think 15k is a bit low...maybe im asking for too much given the price

have you got any numbers on the kumhos pete?

Sorry Russ, I’ve been out of action on the Spyder for many months due to a bad.y deteriorating hip, so I haven’t got any Kuhmo numbers as yet. The hip has just been replaced and I hope to start riding again in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, I don’t think it will be up to a trip to the Muster this year.

bummer pete, hope its a sppedy recoup for you :ok:

the other day I went into bstone tyres Mildura east and they were really helpful ,in that I needed to get my rear tyre off and a new nankang fitted
I asked the lad to blow it up to 36psi
didn't bother checking it and headed off to Adelaide for sat ride :yahoo:
as soon as I  took the Sedan turnoff and started having a go,the bike showed me some very scary oversteer(trying to highside me),so much so that I nearly turned back.no way I could ride bike in company :scared:
I let some air out of the rear but still nfg :pullinghair:
got to birdwood then let some more air out, then I hooked up my on board pump and gauge to the rear....hola there was still 36psi in it
he must have given it 46 not 36  :spank:      lesson learned..always check it myself :clever:

but the damage was done....all through the sat ride with pete and co,i was sensing oversteer(wet roads didnthelp) and that coupled with the low front height of the 55 series front nankangs made me decide to do something about it :cry-1:
after researching,I found that the 65 series were 33mm larger in diameter giving me a lit of 16mm :ok:
so I ordered a set  AS1 165/65/15 nankang :clever:

the next day they arrived in broken hill
so today I went back to Mildura and fitted them :drooling:

they fit perfectly...plenty of room once on...good front height and best of all the sppedo now agrees(within 1 km)with the zumo. with the 55 series we had a 5km/hr difference :scared:

putting them on was another story....I needed to remove the lower mud flap and even then no go
after I released the rear mudguard stay they went on ok :ok:

took bike for a short ride and the thing is a dream to be on.....there is just no feeling like a new set of front tyres :beer1:
if they prove to be worthy ill prob set about packing the front guard out to make on and off easier but so far so good

the orig plan was to set the rear to 36psi and monitor tyre wear.....due to the induced oversteer I had to lower the rear to 22 but now I plan to try it back up to 36 and see how long the tyre lasts this time
